5 Tips to Manage Your Anxiety this Holiday Season — Guest Post from Elena Ollis

Updated: Sep 24

When we feel anxious it is often said that it is like a hundred thoughts running through our head at once. Here is one Grounding exercise that can help you achieve decreased anxiety:

To begin, place your feet firmly on the ground while sitting comfortably in a chair.

After you find a comfortable spot, follow these steps:

  1. Name 5 things you can see in the room with you.

  2. Name 4 things you can feel (“chair on my back” or “feet on floor”)

  3. Name 3 things you can hear right now

  4. Name 2 things you can smell right now (or, 2 things you like the smell of)

  5. Name 1 good thing about yourself.

This technique will help keep you in the present moment, regain mental focus, and to allow the thoughts to slow down, thus decreasing the anxiety.
